We study hematopoietic stem cell fate decisions to understand normal blood formation and what aspects are dysregulated in blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. We investigate hematopoietic development prior to and soon after birth to understand how the immune system develops upon a child’s exposure to life outside the womb and how this affects susceptibility to asthma, allergy, and autoimmune disorders. We interrogate the mechanisms that control hematopoietic cell location to improve the safety and efficiency of bone marrow transplantations to cure leukemias and other blood disorders. We also study how hematopoiesis is altered by aging to understand how blood and immune cells contribute to age-related increases in anemia, clotting disorders, and immune dysfunction.
